Summer Time Pool Thoughts

July 12, 2010

Welcome to Summertime on Cape Cod! This weather is what we have been wishing for since last Labor day. Great beach and pool weather.

However the lack of rain and cloudy days has its impacts on our pools. The lack of rain has kept our pH in normal ranges – no acid rain to worry about. However we are seeing a fair amount of evaporative loss, and lots of chlorine loss. Here are some things to think about during these great pool days.

WATER LEVEL:

  • Check your water level – it will better enable backwashing.
  • It is not unusual to lose water this time of year, 1/2′ to 1″ per week through evaporation is not unusual, more loss through heavy splashout use is possible.

Recommendation: Use “Water Pills” to help retard evaporation, and add water as required.

WATER CHEMISTRY:

  • Check Chlorine levels frequently. These sunny days consume chlorine quickly.
  • Cloudy water is an obvious sign that algae is growing – add chlorine, maybe a shocking.
  • Check Stabilizer (cyanuric acid) level to be sure it is in the correct range (40 – 70 parts per million) to retard chlorine loss.
  • Do not exceed 70 PPM, as too much Stabilizer must be diluted to reduce it.

If any doubts or concerns bring in a water sample to our Hyannis or Dennisport stores.

Happy Summer!

Getting Ready for Spring

February 2, 2010

  1. Schedule your pool opening in plenty of time for that very important family gathering. Remember pool companies are very busy in the Spring.
  2. If building a new pool also be cognizant that Springtime is very busy for pool companies and plan accordingly.
  3. Anticipate the possibility of excessive algal growth if your winter cover is inadequate and additional time may be required to clear up.
  4. Anticipate the possibility that your equipment may need attention.
